3 Ways South Africans Are Making Money With AI in 2026 (Number 3 Is the One I Use)

Most people are using AI to make a bit of extra rand on the side. That's not what this is about. This is about using AI to build things that pay you in dollars — from right here in South Africa. Below are the three ways that are actually working in 2026, and why number three is the one I've built my own business on.

I've been earning online since 2012, and fully online since 2020. In that time I've built a portfolio of websites that quietly pay me every month — and everything I earn, I earn in dollars. AI has changed what's actually possible for someone sitting at a laptop in South Africa. Not in a hype, "the future is coming" way — in a "here are three things you can start this week" way.

Method 1: Digital products

The write-once, sell-forever route

The first way is selling digital products — and I don't mean anything complicated. I mean simple PDFs that solve a problem people are already paying to solve.

Here's a real example. I once saw someone selling a guide on how to get hired for jobs on cruise ships — which careers exist on board, what they pay, and how to actually apply. That's it. Useful information, packaged neatly, sold over and over.

Where AI changes everything

You don't need to be the world's biggest expert. You take everything you already know about a topic — even just a little — and hand it to Claude or ChatGPT. It fills the gaps, structures it into chapters, tightens the writing and helps you design the finished product. What used to take weeks now takes an afternoon.

Method 2: AI automation

The sell-a-service route

The second way is for people who'd rather sell a service than build a product. Every business with a website needs the same two things: more leads, and more of those leads turning into paying customers. AI can now do a huge amount of that work — and most business owners have no idea it's even possible.

You can set up chatbots that answer customer questions day and night. You can build simple CRM systems that follow up with leads automatically. You can wire up automations that capture enquiries and lift conversions on sites that are currently leaking business every day.

Why businesses pay for this

Local businesses will pay well for it — because you're not selling them tech. You're selling them more customers. And most of them will never set it up themselves.

Method 3: AI websites, products & marketing The one I use

Build an asset that pays you in dollars

This is the big one — the way I actually run my own business. This is where AI stops being a side hustle and becomes a real income engine.

I use AI to design websites, marketing funnels, landing pages, widgets, tool sites and plugins. I use it to create content and generate videos, every single day. R10,000 a month online — roughly what an entry-level job pays in South Africa — is a realistic target, not a fantasy. In this post (and the video below) I'll walk through the honest ways to get there, and the one that took me from R0 to over R8,000 a month in just three months.

There isn't one secret — there are several real routes

Most people think there's one magic way to make money online. There isn't. What there actually is, is a handful of legitimate routes that can each get you to R10,000 a month. None of them are get-rich-quick. All of them take work. But they're real, and here they are:

Selling on Takealot Marketplace — listing physical products on South Africa's biggest online store.
Dropshipping — selling products online without holding your own stock.
Affiliate marketing — earning commissions by sending buyers to other people's products. This is what I do, and what I'll focus on.
Network marketing — programmes like Forever Living, Herbalife and Legacy Builders.
Teaching English online — getting paid to tutor students overseas.
Selling your own digital products — ebooks, templates, courses, presets.
Starting a YouTube channel — like the one this post came from.

Every one of those can realistically reach R10,000 a month. So why do I push affiliate marketing?

Why affiliate marketing is the fastest path — for me

I used to work as an SEO specialist. So for me, taking a website from R0 to R10,000 a month is the easiest path I know. I'm not holding stock. I'm not managing shipping. I'm not recruiting anyone into a downline. I build a website, get it in front of the right people, and earn a commission when they buy through it.

What's changed

You no longer need to be an SEO specialist to do this. AI now does the heavy lifting that used to take me years to learn — so the barrier that kept most people out is basically gone.

Proof: I built a website with AI in about an hour

I recently shared a one-minute clip on TikTok showing exactly this. I started a brand-new website, fully designed with Claude AI, and had it set up in about an hour. Then I built some links to it and matched it with a high-converting affiliate program that fit the site perfectly.

Put that in perspective

R16,000 a month is about what an entry-level job pays in South Africa. Except this didn't need a degree, a boss, a commute or a CV — and it took three months, not years.

You can do this too

Here's the honest part: you can absolutely do this yourself. You can use ChatGPT and Claude to design the website, come up with marketing strategies to pull in traffic, and help you land your very first sale. The tools are right there, and most are free or nearly free to start.

But I'll be straight with you. The slowest way to learn anything is on your own, by trial and error. The fastest way is to have someone walk you through the process — someone who shows you what to actually look for when you're spotting website ideas and opportunities, and how to actually use AI to design the site and get real traffic to it.

In 2023, the same week I launched the website my Rank to Earn course is built around, I quietly launched three more sites on the side — simple one-page funnel sites, the exact kind I teach in my entry-level One Pager course. I barely touched them again. Three years later, they earn me between $1,800 and $2,000 a month, from what adds up to maybe a single month of work spread across three years. Here's the honest breakdown of how.

The experiment: three sites, launched and left alone

I've told the story of a big, investor-funded project before. This one is the opposite — and honestly, it's the story I'm more proud of. Back in 2023 I set up three simple one-page funnel sites on the side and then, more or less, walked away. No daily grind, no constant tinkering. I wanted to see what these little sites could become if I gave them the right start and let time do the heavy lifting. (I've embedded my full video walkthrough of these exact sites above — this is the written version.)

The whole setup took about two hours

Here's the part people struggle to believe. I designed each one-pager off a WordPress template, built a handful of cheap, easy backlinks so Google and Bing would index them and hand them a little authority — and then I closed the laptop. No AI mass-production, no fancy tools, no daily grind. Just about two hours per site, then walk away.

These days I don't even buy templates — I build my own with Claude. I wrote up exactly how in my guide on building your own WordPress templates with Claude. The only thing I did after launch was watch. Each site was wired up to Google Analytics and Search Console, so the moment one started gaining traction, I'd know — and that traction would be my cue to put in a little more effort.

How a two-hour site became a three-year asset

When a site showed signs of life, I fed it a little more. Here's how that played out:

A few months in

The first signal

50 to 100 visitors a day — from two hours of work. That was my cue to invest a little more.

Keyword pages & reviews

Climbed to around 500 a day. All AI-written, but with prompts that make it read like a human. More pages meant more keywords, more traffic — and the first sales started landing.

Then

Translated into more languages

Around 1,000 a day. This was the one real expense — you don't have to do it, but it opens the site to a much bigger audience.

Age 2

Patience pays off

Google doesn't trust new sites, so rankings bounced around for a while. But once the sites hit age two, traffic stabilised, the keywords got more competitive, and earnings climbed with them.

Some people spend money on premium backlinks at this stage to push authority and rankings harder. I didn't — these were side projects and I wasn't trying to spend big. Patience did most of the work for free.

Where they stand today

Two of the three sites now make around $1,500 a month each (about R25,000). The third does $300–500 a month. Combined, that's roughly $1,800–2,000 every month — from sites I've put maybe one month of total work into across three years.

About half of that ~$1,200 went on translation. Everything else is evergreen content that keeps earning whether I show up or not. And because these sites have real traffic and revenue, they're assets — I could sell them tomorrow. They have genuine value.

In 2012, I started a simple fitness blog while I was still at university — no marketing degree, no corporate experience, and honestly no real idea what I was doing. Within a year it was pulling around 100,000 page views a month. That blog taught me the lesson that changed my life: you don't need to be in the US or UK to build income online. You need the right skills, the right system, and a website that ranks. This is how that turned into a real online business here in South Africa.

It started with a fitness blog

In 2012, I was a university student who liked training and wanted to share what I was learning. So I started a fitness blog. I had no marketing degree and no corporate experience — I was learning by doing, one post at a time. But within a year that blog was getting around 100,000 page views a month and earning me between R2,000 and R3,000 monthly.

It wasn't a lot of money. But it was the moment something clicked for me: if a student in South Africa can attract that kind of traffic from search, then location isn't the real barrier. Skills are. Systems are. That realisation is where everything else began.

What that blog really taught me

By 2013, the blog had grown to about 100,000 monthly page views. It was making some money, but looking back, I know it was never properly monetised — I was still figuring things out. What it did give me, though, was proof of something powerful: build an audience through search traffic, and you have the foundation of a real business. That single lesson stuck with me long after the blog itself faded.

The decision: digital marketing over civil engineering

A few years later, in 2017, I made a big decision. Instead of pursuing civil engineering, I chose to build a career in digital marketing. I'd watched people like Pat Flynn and Matthew Woodward build serious income from websites overseas, and I kept asking myself the same question: if they can do it with blogs and websites, why can't someone from South Africa do it too?

But I also knew blog experience alone wasn't enough. I wanted to understand how SEO actually worked for real businesses, startups, and competitive industries — not just for a hobby blog.

Learning SEO for real

So I went and got the experience. My first digital marketing internship was at an event-tech startup, where I learned Facebook ads, blogging, and social media marketing for business. From there I joined an agency as an intern and finally learned SEO properly — local SEO, technical SEO, on-page SEO, and link building.

Then I joined a crypto tech startup as an SEO Manager. That role pushed me to another level, because I was running SEO with no supervision. I had to make the decisions, test the strategies, solve the problems, and take full ownership. And I thrived.

COVID, consulting, and a six-figure business

When COVID hit, I started consulting. Over time I built a six-figure-per-month consulting business — building the team, the strategy, and the systems from the ground up. That process gave me confidence. It made me realise I already had the skills I needed to build my own business, not just other people's.

The conversation that became Rank to Earn

For a long time, I thought I needed more money before I could start properly. Then a single conversation with a friend changed everything. We got talking about what I do, how SEO works, and how profitable websites can be built without a massive budget. Five years ago I was earning R30,000 a month. Since then — after leaving my job and starting my own business — I've made over R24 million. This is the honest story of how I made my first million online here in South Africa, the stages it actually happened in, and how it changed the way I think about money and freedom.

The salary that felt fine — until I looked closer

Back in February and March of 2020, my official salary was R30,000 a month. That's R360,000 a year. At the time, it felt decent. It was stable. It was respectable.

But looking back now, I realise something important: my job wasn't paying me based on my potential. It was paying me based on my position. And the moment I became self-employed, that changed completely.

Leaving the job: my first month on my own

My first month consulting was April 2020. I made around R40,000. Not life-changing money yet — but already more than I'd been making in my job. And from there, things started moving quickly.

Between April 2020 and April 2021, I made around R900,000. So in about 12 to 13 months, I'd made my first million rand as a self-employed person. And the funny thing is, I didn't even realise it at the time. I was too busy — too deep in client work, too focused on delivering, taking meetings, and keeping everything moving.

But even though I didn't notice the number immediately, I noticed my life changing. Suddenly I wasn't broke in the last week of the month. I could save. I could start thinking about travel. And around March or April 2021, I bought my first car. That mattered — not because the car was the goal, but because it showed me I was no longer stuck in survival mode.

The hidden problem: I was still selling my time

Here's what the income number hid. From April 2020 to August 2021, most of my money came from consulting, and by July 2021 I was making around R150,000 a month. On paper, that sounds amazing — and it was. But behind the scenes, I was burning out.

I had meetings all the time. I was dealing with internal company politics. I was fighting battles inside businesses that weren't even mine. And because most of my clients were South African, I realised I wasn't charging enough for the value I was providing. I had unlocked a new level of income, but I hadn't unlocked freedom. I had money — I just didn't have enough time.

So I started asking a different question. Instead of "How do I get more clients?", I started asking, "How do I make money without needing to be in meetings all day?"

The shift: building assets instead of selling hours

In April 2021, I started experimenting with building my own affiliate websites. The idea was simple: instead of building things for clients, I'd build assets for myself. No meetings. No office politics. No waiting for approvals. No selling my time hour by hour. Just me, my websites, my strategy, and the internet.

At first it was only an experiment. But within a few months those sites started making real money — enough that I could walk away from my R150,000-a-month consulting business. That was a scary decision, because consulting already worked. But I knew that if I kept doing it, I'd stay trapped in the same cycle: more money, but more stress; more clients, but less freedom. So I went all in on affiliate marketing.

When the money became life-changing

By December 2021, I was making around R1 million every three to four months. That was the first time the money felt truly life-changing. Making my first million in a year had changed my life, but it happened gradually — almost invisibly while it was happening. Making a million every few months felt different. It felt predictable. It felt like a level I honestly never imagined reaching.

For context: I used to think making R80,000 a month by the age of 50 would be the dream. That was the goal in my head. So to be earning far more than that, much earlier than expected, felt unreal.

Then in 2022, something even crazier happened — I had my first R1 million month. One month. One million rand. That moment was pure ecstasy, because until then those numbers felt like something Americans talked about on YouTube. They didn't feel real for someone building from South Africa. But that month proved the internet doesn't care where you're from the way we sometimes think it does. If you understand distribution, value, traffic, monetisation, and leverage, the ceiling is far higher than a salary can ever show you.

Now let me be honest: those million-rand months were not consistent. I had three of them between 2022 and 2023, and then in 2024 things dipped. That's business — there are highs, there are dips, there are seasons where you feel unstoppable and seasons where you have to rethink everything.

In 2022 I also started travelling internationally as a reward to myself. Two business models, one promise

If you've spent any time online lately, you've almost certainly seen both of these worlds pitched at you. Network marketing shows up as recognisable names like Herbalife and Forever Living, or as social-media programs like Legacy Builder. Affiliate marketing shows up as bloggers, reviewers, and creators quietly recommending products with a link.

Before we go further, one thing needs saying: I'm not here to bash anyone. People have built genuine wealth in both models, and both have humbled plenty of others. The goal of this post is simply to give you a fair, factual comparison — the difference between affiliate marketing and network marketing, the real numbers behind each, and an honest answer to which one is better — so you can choose the path that actually fits you.

What each one actually is

Let's keep the definitions simple. With network marketing — also called multi-level marketing (MLM) or direct selling — you join one specific company. You sell that company's products, and you're usually encouraged to recruit other people who then sell underneath you. You earn from your own sales, plus a percentage of what the people on your team sell. Herbalife, Forever Living, and Legacy Builder all run on some version of this structure.

With affiliate marketing, you don't join any single company. You recommend other companies' products, and when someone buys through your unique link, you earn a commission. There's no inventory to hold, no team you're required to build, and no single brand you're locked into.

The difference between affiliate marketing and network marketing

Beyond the definitions, two differences matter most in day-to-day life — and for a lot of people, they're the whole decision.

1. Freedom to promote any brand

As an affiliate, I'm never tied to one brand. Today I might promote software, tomorrow a fitness product, next week a travel service. If a better product comes along, I simply switch — no permission required. In network marketing, your business is built around a single company's catalogue. That has advantages, but it also means that if the company changes its prices, its rules, or its reputation, your income feels it directly. You're building on someone else's foundation.

2. No recruiting required

In most network marketing pay plans, the biggest income doesn't come from selling products — it comes from building a team of other sellers beneath you. So you're not only selling; you're continually recruiting. Affiliate marketing has none of that. I don't recruit anyone and I don't manage a downline. I point people toward products they already want, and I earn when they buy. For many people, that single difference is the deciding factor.

What network marketing does better

To be fair, network marketing has real strengths that affiliate marketing genuinely lacks — and pretending otherwise wouldn't be honest.

Recognisable brands

When you mention Herbalife or Forever Living, people already know the name. There's history, packaging, and a physical product in someone's hand. As an affiliate, I'm often promoting products people have never heard of, which means I have to build trust from scratch every single time.

A community that feels like a movement

This is the big one. Network marketing companies build teams, group chats, live events, conferences, and awards nights. People feel like they belong to something — a team, a mission, almost a movement. There's mentorship, celebration, and people cheering you on both online and offline. Affiliate marketing, by contrast, can be lonely. It's mostly you, your laptop, and your analytics — no stage, no standing ovation, no crowd chanting your name. If you're driven by belonging and energy, that community is worth a lot, and it's something I genuinely respect.

ℹ Worth remembering If community and a recognisable brand are what keep you motivated, network marketing offers something affiliate marketing simply doesn't. That's not a small advantage — for many people it's the difference between sticking with it and quitting.

Affiliate marketing vs network marketing: industry size

The scale of these two industries surprises most people. Network marketing — or direct selling — is the giant. Globally it's worth somewhere around $200 billion a year, with well over 100 million people involved worldwide, and it's been around for decades (Amway since the 1950s, Herbalife and Forever Living since the late 1970s and early 80s). Affiliate marketing is much younger and much smaller by comparison, at roughly $15–18 billion a year globally, with the United States making up the largest share. But here's the twist: affiliate marketing is growing fast — around 15% a year — while network marketing has largely flattened out.

One honest caveat: those two figures measure slightly different things. The network marketing number counts total product sales, while the affiliate number counts marketing spend and commissions. So it isn't a perfect apples-to-apples comparison — but it still tells you which world is bigger today, and which one is climbing fastest.

Who actually does each — ages and demographics

The people behind each model differ too, and the age profiles are closer than you'd expect. Network marketing leans a little older and is heavily female — roughly three out of four participants are women, and most sit between their mid-30s and mid-50s, often people looking for flexible income around family or another job.

Affiliate marketing skews slightly younger and slightly more male. The single biggest group is aged 35–44, with a strong showing in the 25–34 range — people who grew up online and are comfortable with websites, SEO, and social platforms — and most affiliates work solo. In short, both attract that 25-to-45 core, but network marketing pulls in more women and more people in their 50s, while affiliate marketing pulls in more solo, tech-comfortable creators.

So which is better — affiliate marketing or network marketing?

For me, affiliate marketing wins on freedom and simplicity. I'm not locked to one brand, I don't have to recruit or manage a team, and I can build around products I actually believe in, in any niche I choose. But I won't pretend it's better for everyone. If you thrive on community, love a recognisable brand, and want the energy of a team behind you, network marketing might genuinely suit you better.

Both can work. Both have created millionaires, and both have humbled plenty of others. The real question isn't which industry is "better" in the abstract — it's which one fits the way you like to work. For me, that's affiliate marketing. For you, it might be something else entirely, and that's completely fine.

The brief: take an aged site and make it earn

Back in 2020 I was an affiliate website operator when a group of investors approached me with a specific challenge. They owned an aged news website with real domain history and authority, and they wanted it rebuilt into an affiliate site within the same niche. The budget was $60,000, and the mandate was clear: build a team, run the operation, and turn the site into a genuine money-maker.

One non-negotiable: this had to be authentic. AI writing wasn't a thing yet, and the investors specifically wanted real human writers and real human translators so the site read like a true authority in its space. No shortcuts, no thin content. If we wanted Google and readers to trust it, every word had to be written by someone who actually knew the subject and the language.

★ The real lesson of this whole story Running a website as a business isn't about doing everything yourself. It's about understanding every role in the engine — then hiring the right person for each seat. That single mindset shift is what turns a side project into a business.

Step one: competitor research and reverse engineering

Before I hired a single person, I needed to know exactly what "winning" looked like in this niche. So I went deep on competitor research using tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush. I reverse-engineered the strongest sites in the space — their keywords, their content structure, their backlink profiles, the offers they were promoting and how they were monetising.

That research told me what kind of content we needed, how much of it, what topics to prioritise, and where the link-building opportunities were. It also told me something more important: what roles I'd need to fill to actually compete. Before you build a team, you map the work. Before you map the work, you study the people already winning.

This is where freelancer platforms changed everything for me. I used Fiverr and Upwork to recruit talented developers affordably from countries like India and across Eastern Europe. The same platforms let me find skilled native-language translators for every market we wanted to enter.

Our base content was in English, but I'd decided we needed four more languages to reach our full target audience. That meant getting everything translated by native speakers who understood the nuances of the language — because a literal translation doesn't convert. Copy that converts reads like it was written by a local, not run through a dictionary. It was an expensive exercise. It was also completely worth it.

Here's the exciting part. Everything I paid good money for in 2020 is dramatically easier and cheaper now. The strategy hasn't changed — you still need all the pieces — but AI tools have collapsed the cost of filling several of those seats.

These days, for most websites, I no longer need to hire developers. I no longer need designers for images and logos. And I no longer need to hire translators. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Veed.io and Cuppa handle work that used to require an entire freelance team — making it far simpler and cheaper to run a website as a business.

I'm not writing this as someone who researched online side hustles. I'm writing it as someone who has earned all of his income online for years through websites, SEO, consulting, and affiliate marketing.

My online journey started back in 2012, when I built my first website and began learning affiliate marketing while still at university. I've worked in SEO and digital marketing officially since 2017. And since 2020, I've made 100% of my income fully online — generating more than $1.4 million in that time. Affiliate marketing is my number one recommendation because it's the model I know best and the one that has made me the most money. You promote another company's product or service, and you earn a commission when someone buys, signs up, deposits, subscribes, or becomes a lead.

The reason it's so powerful: you don't create your own product, manage stock, handle support, or process orders. Your job is to connect the right audience with the right offer. That's it.

Building websites is closely related to affiliate marketing, but it deserves its own section because the website itself becomes a valuable online asset. A website can earn through affiliate marketing, display ads, lead generation, your own services, your own digital products, or by being sold later as an asset.

My first real experience with the power of websites came in 2012 while I was studying at university. I started a fitness blog. Within a year, that blog grew to around 100,000 monthly page views and started earning around $120 to $180 per month. That might not sound like a fortune, but it changed how I saw the internet.

It showed me that a website could attract strangers from Google and turn that attention into money. That lesson eventually led me into digital marketing, SEO, consulting, and affiliate marketing — and years later, into earning my entire income online.

Unlike social posts that disappear in hours, SEO content keeps bringing traffic for months or even years if it ranks well. A good article works while you sleep. A strong website becomes an income-generating machine. But it takes time, skill, and patience.

Paid Media for Affiliate Offers & Digital Products

While SEO is my main traffic channel, paid media is the fastest way to scale once you know which offers convert. Instead of waiting 6 to 12 months for content to rank on Google, you buy targeted traffic from Facebook, Google, TikTok, YouTube, native ad networks, or Reddit — and send that traffic straight to an affiliate offer, your own digital product, or a landing page.

The math is brutally simple. If it costs you $50 in ads to make $150 in commissions, you scale. If it doesn't work, you kill the campaign and try the next angle. Once you find a winning combination of ad creative, offer, and audience, you can scale it from $10/day to $1,000/day in a matter of weeks.

The trade-off: this is the highest-skill, highest-risk path on this list. You can burn $5,000 in a week learning what doesn't work. But the upside is real — most of the people I know earning $50,000+ per month from affiliate marketing get there through paid traffic, not SEO.

Best forPeople comfortable with data, A/B testing, losing money on tests, and constant optimisation.

How to startPick ONE platform (Facebook for affiliate, Google for high-intent) → study what's already working using Meta Ad Library or AdSpy → start with a small daily budget on a proven offer → scale only after you've validated positive ROI.
