I've been earning online since 2012, and fully online since 2020. In that time I've built a portfolio of websites that quietly pay me every month — and everything I earn, I earn in dollars. AI has changed what's actually possible for someone sitting at a laptop in South Africa. Not in a hype, "the future is coming" way — in a "here are three things you can start this week" way.
The write-once, sell-forever route
The first way is selling digital products — and I don't mean anything complicated. I mean simple PDFs that solve a problem people are already paying to solve.
Here's a real example. I once saw someone selling a guide on how to get hired for jobs on cruise ships — which careers exist on board, what they pay, and how to actually apply. That's it. Useful information, packaged neatly, sold over and over.
You don't need to be the world's biggest expert. You take everything you already know about a topic — even just a little — and hand it to Claude or ChatGPT. It fills the gaps, structures it into chapters, tightens the writing and helps you design the finished product. What used to take weeks now takes an afternoon.

The sell-a-service route
The second way is for people who'd rather sell a service than build a product. Every business with a website needs the same two things: more leads, and more of those leads turning into paying customers. AI can now do a huge amount of that work — and most business owners have no idea it's even possible.
You can set up chatbots that answer customer questions day and night. You can build simple CRM systems that follow up with leads automatically. You can wire up automations that capture enquiries and lift conversions on sites that are currently leaking business every day.
Local businesses will pay well for it — because you're not selling them tech. You're selling them more customers. And most of them will never set it up themselves.
Build an asset that pays you in dollars
This is the big one — the way I actually run my own business. This is where AI stops being a side hustle and becomes a real income engine.
I use AI to design websites, marketing funnels, landing pages, widgets, tool sites and plugins. I use it to create content and generate videos, every single day. And here's the part that matters most: I monetise those AI-built sites with affiliate links. That's how I make money with AI from South Africa.
